10 Random facts/habits about me.

1. When faced with a choice between going out or staying home on a free day, I'd choose staying home.
2. I am so not into household chores. I would go crazy if I didn't have to work but have to stay at home doing household chores. (This makes me admire SAHMs all the more, coz it's hard work!) I am glad that I live in the Philippines where household help is easy to come by.
   
3. I drive because I have to. But if somebody else is with me, I would rather just be a passenger.
4. I am not much of a shopping person. Which makes me different from a lot of women.
5. I love to read. But lately I do not have the time to do so anymore.
6. I am a late bloomer -- had my first (and only) boyfriend at 29, got married at 34 and had my first kid at 35.
7. I love my job. My lifelong ambition is to be a doctor and I am one. I just wish people know that we don't really make as much as they think we do.
8. I speak fluent Mandarin, though with a Chinese-Filipino accent. People from Taiwan think I'm from the mainland and people from China mainland think I'm from Taiwan whenever I speak :D.
9. I love the chicken feet in dimsum!
10. I don't eat sardines. I don't know why -- they just turn me off.

Thoughts on Dating

1. When was your first kiss and where?
Secret! :)

2. When was your first real relationship and how long did it last?
I was a late bloomer. I had my first boyfriend at 29 years old. It lasted for 5 years. Then, we got married. :)

3. What age were you allowed to date?
Dad and Mom wanted me to finish my medical studies first. So, I guess, 26?

4. What’s the craziest thing you did (for love) when you were a teenager?
I really can't remember :). I was a pretty level headed (boring!) teen!

5. How long was your longest relationship and what’s the secret?
I only had 1 relationship and that's with my husband. So far we're "us" for 9 years already. More than 5 years since we became steadies and a bit less than 4 years since we got married.

The secret? Understanding, giving each other space, constant communication and of course, love.

6. How long did you date before you decided to settle down?
5 years. But we actually talked about marriage around 2 years into the relationship. Other external factors prevented us from taking the plunge until we were on for 5 years.

7. How did you know he was the ONE?
It's not that easy to explain. It was never one big, grand gesture. It was all in the details, the small things he did that made me feel special and taken cared of. I knew he would always do those little things. :)

8. Now, at what age will you allow your kid(s) to date?
I really do not know. But I'll make sure I'll arm my kids with the necessary knowledge. I don't think "not allowing" them to date means they won't -- they'll just keep it a secret. So I guess it's better not to "not allow" them, but let them know about what to watch out for. Hopefully they'll listen.

9. When it comes to your kids dating, will you be a cool parent or a strict parent?
I think my husband will be the stricter one between the two of us, especially if we have a daughter. Like I said, I'll try to let them know all there is to know about dating and hope those lessons take root in their hearts.

10. What piece of advice can you give to your child when they start dating?
Don't be forced into anything you do not want to.

Married Life

This week's coffee break by Jan is about married life. Coincidentally, Aggie also posted questions about married life! Here's my take on the topic.

What do you love most about being married? (Coffee Break ver 1.25)

Being in love, and working at staying in love. Marriage is always a work in progress. My husband and I went through, and will go through a lot of trials and tribulations, but at the end of it all, through all good things and bad, we continue to remember why we vowed to stay with each other. And that's because we love each other. Sure, we may have bad days and bad moods. Sure, we have some small quarrels once in a while. But as long as we keep our lines of communication open and try to understand each other, and remember all the reasons why we chose each other...we'll remember why we chose to live with each other rather than live our own life individually.

What are the things you want them to know about life after the wedding? (Aggie Wants To Know #1)

My brother's getting married very, very soon. And while these things may sound negative, this is what I want them to know about getting married:

1. When you get married, you don't decide things just for yourself. You have to ALWAYS consider your spouse in your decisions. Later, when you have kids, the more you have to take them into consideration.
2. Money matters may be a source of conflicts within the marriage. A lot of breakups occur because of conflicts over money -- how it should be spent, how much to save, what to spend it on. Decide early on how you are going to manage your money matters. Who's contributing to what, how much you can spend for yourself without having to inform the other, joint and separate bank accounts, insurance and all those other nitty gritty stuff.
3. Although it's romantic to think that marriage is about the two of you, the reality is that marriage also involves other people. Remember that your in-laws are your spouse's family. You have to treat them with respect.
   
4. Children are a joy to have. I have one and I want another one. But having children is definitely not a rash decision to make. Are you ready to raise children? Do you both have the emotional maturity to decide things for a totally dependent being? Children are also expensive. The cost of giving birth, medical care, diapers, milk, education, etc etc will get a big chunk out of your income. Are YOU ready for that?
   
5. As I've said in the paragraph above, the you need at working to stay in love. I'm sure there are things about your partner that irritate you, as early as now. Believe me, more will come out when you are already married. When you're with a person 24/7, sharing the same house, the same room and the same bed, you see all the tiny little quirks that add up to your irritation. Choosing to stay in love also means having to ignore these little (and big) quirks that irritate you so much and remembering all the things that made you fall in love with each other in the first place.

I realize I sound a little negative, but those are the realities of married life. But I'll say that I'm happier now that I'm married, with a child, than I was when I was single. If I go through life again, I'd make the same choices.
